Winter Creeps Up On Dogs Too

Winter Creeps Up On Dogs Too

Winter creep moves in fast. It is at the door every fall warning us to get ready. We try not to let it get in the way of life, we avoid the thought of it, when it hovers at the door, we head for cover. But it always makes it’s way in anyway. For dogs, they are just as happy to flash out the door and face it head on. Well, maybe not so in a blizzard. But you can’t ignore their keenness to get out and face the elements with enthusiasm.

If you are a dog, a whole new set of skills have to be resurrected to pass the winter the canine way. Sniffing, checking, diving, snorting, biting, burying, flipping, dodging … all require fur creature cold weather defence mechanisms AND traction.

Invitation To Play, Retreat, Refresh and Rebound and many other favourite games need foot and body control in the best of times. In winter conditions it is non stop fur flying, fangs flashing, paws skidding, body bracing then withdraw to make snow dogs. There are no angels in this world, it is each dog for himself in the game of snow survival.
