Oh, The Places You’ll Go (On A Bicycle)

Oh, The Places You’ll Go (On A Bicycle)

“You’ll look up and down streets.  Look ’em over with care.
….
you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.”

Dr Seuss

These words apply to street photography as well as graduations; what could these activities have in common?

Dr Seuss, who proclaimed the joy of adventuring into new locales, might not have had bicycling in temperatures hanging out at 30 C in California desert cities on his brain when he picked up the quill for these oft quoted words of wisdom.  But the basic idea behind the poem can be applied to street photography in the middle of the day, just a few hours after most photographers shut down for a siesta. If you get out and roam around “with care”, in this case on a bicycle, interesting stories may show up in front of your lens. A street sofa begging for wobbly legs, a fan struggling to keep the cacti cool, an umbrella working overtime to keep the unsteady walker from tottering in the heat, a five car police raid including vehicle strip search (maybe that was a “not-so-good street”), a textured landscape or a unique mailbox all popped into my box within a few minutes. You get the picture, there are stories to be gathered on most streets, just stay on the good ones.
