New York City Snowstorm

New York City Snowstorm

Catch It While You Can

A wish come true.

You can only hope to be accompanied by a camera in a place as densely populated as New York City when it is mildly crippled by Mother Nature. We are talking about mayor’s orders off the streets temporarily, not the tumult of the century that could bring real harm. A New York city snowstorm that will change routine is enough. Slushing through this weather gift, humanity stoops, meditating on crisp crystals as it maneuvers through what was routine only yesterday. Slugging the streets with heads cowered, limbs braced, digits clamped, foraging, despite the elements. Tires spin, large canines lumber, others selectively fashion a trail. Strangers help those in distress while whiteness prevails. Deliveries make their way through streets humbled by mounting inches of frozen displeasure. Bicycles adjust course, wielding new tracks as old routes are blanketed. Shovels scrape, snowblowers rediscovered. Scampering children, snowshoers and expectant photographers are delighted, the latter, childlike, swinging their light boxes scanning for magic on the next street.

Hit the streets to witness Manhattan limping slightly, but by no means defeated. Adults and pets and children and transportation and parks and shops and pigeons and pizza deliveries all cower to the elements and then adapt. By the time the snowfall has ended the city has picked up its gait significantly and hums on.

Total envy going on here, Heather. NYC without snow is an amazing place to be in (and photograph), but in my mind’s eye I could envision this iconic city covered with snow. Thanks for confirming that it is the place to be during winter storms. Just another bucket on the list.

Thanks Keith. New York City is a great place to visit (and even better when you have a kid living there). It was hard to face packing winter outerwear for a “holiday” after the mild prairie winter we have had. I hoped for one snow day and we go three. That is the winter the east coast has had to put up with.
