More Havana Hot Rods

In a city where the streets are a museum, American Cars offer life.

With over a million visitors annually, Havana car owners have to keep their 70 year old plus carriages mobile. Beyond their sheer novelty, outsiders can’t help but admire that these seniors have been horsepower workhorses out of necessity. They don’t route tourists around Old Havana streets clinging to a time past, nostalgic for life in Cuba before the “Revolution”. This is no tourist trap, rather, it’s the real thing. Depending on what the three generations of vintage car owners have had access to under perpetual sanctions and embargos, some are more pristine than others but none are discarded to the garbage heap without every attempt to keep it humming. Access to tourist “convertibles”, valued at over 30 times the Cuban peso, feeds the work ethic. “Eat What You Kill”, or, in this case, “Factory Orders Ended In 1959, Fix With What You Have”. They parade around classical Spanish plazas in a kaleidoscope of colours never imagined by Chevrolet. Cubans have become masters at keeping these old relics mobile, giving hybrid a whole new meaning. Tuneups and bodywork offer street photographers access to the people. It is easy to strike up a conversation with a Havanan about his pride and lifeline or, better still, dare to step into history by sharing a cruise about town with a local in one of these. Pick your colour.
