Mongolian Horse Race Warm Up

Mongolian Horse Race Warm Up

Side – betting and gossip prevails. We all know it. It is one of those unacknowledged events that make life more compelling.

A main feature among the attendees is ingesting festive foods and engaging in celebratory dialogue with friends and family, including the odd horse race wager. For the participants, distance is key as serious focus separates the horse race leaders from the hindmost and too much intermixing might distort the race plan. Jockeys have been readying for months (if not since the last annual race ), tearing around in the Mongolian steppe, bareback on their preselected steed, groomed and trained, leaning out just before the race. All of the tactics that keep the horse a neck ahead of the crowd are practiced.

Behind the scenes the dust never settles as riders and beasts warm up among the tents and barbecues and children and elders and parked cars and tack. To an outsider it is chaos. To the Mongolians, who grow up on the backs of feisty horses, it is annual horserace season and walking among horses readying for the match is normalcy. Rare would it be to find a Mongolian who wasn’t comfortable with Адуу (Mongolian for horse) or aduu in their midst.
